An electric player to watch, Ruiz has long been known as one of the more polished shortstop prospects on the prep side of the class.
At the plate, Ruiz is a switch hitter, and uses his mature approach and top of the class bat to ball skills to reach base at a high clip. Ruiz sinks deep into his legs, and uses a controlled leg kick to time up well at the plate. It’s a quick and direct swing with no wasted movement in the hands, and the ability to slap balls the other way and make last second swing decisions. The impact is the only real question in his game, but there's still plenty of room in Ruiz's in 5 foot 10 frame to add strength that could eventually translate into his offensive game. Extremely quick out of the box, Ruiz is an above average runner and he hustles hard on every ball he puts in play.
At shortstop, Ruiz possesses one of the better gloves in the entire class. He shows super twitchy actions, quick hands and quick feet, paired with a strong internal clock and an above average arm. He's a defender that can truly impact the game and he's a commander from the shortstop position. The offensive impact will most definitely need to be watched closely throughout the spring, but the contact skills and defense give Ruiz a pretty high floor that will entice teams to take him early next July.
