Brendan Lawson

Lawson has a chance to be the most exciting offensive prospect in the 2027 MLB Draft. The bat here could end up being something special.

Lawson has a bit of an unorthodox set up at the plate. He starts slightly open with a higher hand set and a taller posture before coiling into his back hip and utilizing a toe tap to time up. Lawson has remarkably twitchy hips and explosive hands through the zone. It's a sweet left-handed swing with plenty of organic loft that allows him to tap into large amounts of his raw power.

One thing that is abundantly clear when you watch Lawson in person is how mature of a hitter he is, the pitch selection skills at this stage really stand out. Lawson runs miniscule chase rates, at times bordering on passive with how selective he can be. It's an approach that won't require much tweaking at the next level, Lawson is going to get on base plenty. The standout swing decisions are further aided by a blossoming hit tool. His bat-to-ball skills have only improved throughout his time in college, now sitting well above-average. Lawson has a phenomenal track record of hitting, he's already shown plenty of success in his Cape Cod league stints, and hasn't had trouble at all when tasked with hitting with a wood bat even dating back to his high school days in Canada. It's already an above-average hit tool.

Lawson has a chance to grow into 60-grade game power, comfortably. He's capable of hitting tape-measure shots with exit velocities that have peaked north of 114 mph. His hard-hit rates are rivaled by few in the country, Lawson's feel for the barrel is simply unmatched. All of these factors paired with his outstanding feel for lifting the baseball make it easy to envision a future 30+ home run threat at the big league level. It's hard to find a prospect in this class with the type of offensive tools and pedigree that Lawson brings to the table.

Lawson has steadily improved year after year on the defensive side of the ball as well. He played corner infield mostly as a freshman, but shifted off to shortstop even after adding on some size in 2026. His defensive metrics are solid and he features above-average arm strength, though it's unlikely he'll ever become that of a dynamic defender at the position. Most forecast a future where Lawson moves off to the hot corner as he works his way up the professional ladder, with center field as another possibility.

Lawson's run tool has ticked up from where it was in high school, and he's now an above-average runner who could steal 20+ bags at the next level.
