A standout early on the summer circuit, Koeninger flashes legit two way potential. Scouts are split on which direction he'll ultimately head in, as the profile on both sides is extremely intruiging.
At the plate, Koeninger is a big, physical hitter with a ton of strength in his 6 foot 3 frame. He's rotates strongly, with a bat that stays through the zone well. He'll drift to his front side at times, making him susceptible to breaking balls, and hurting his contact quality. There where some swing and miss concerns towards the end of the summer, mainly with adjusting to pitches outside the zone. The strength that Koeninger possesses is apparent when you watch him swing a baseball bat. There's a potential for him to grow into plus power in the future as he continues to develop. Koeninger is a plus runner as well, athletic despite his strong, physical frame. He's got tools to stick on the left side of the infield with a plus arm and above average actions at shortstop.
On the mound, Koeninger shows a short over the top motion with present arm speed. He's athletic moving down the mound and he'll generate big extension. He'll show the ball early to hitters, lacking deception at times, mainly because of his take away but regardless Koeninger's pitch mix is electric. He'll run his fastball into the upper 90's, with tail and carry, while it flashes below average spin rates it's still an extremely strong offering. His curveball though, is what gets scouts excited. It's a big, upper 70's bender with tight, sharp break that will generate freezes and chases. It looks every bit of a plus pitch. There is also an above average slider that he'll throw in the low 80's. Koeninger will at times use a changeup against lefties but its underdeveloped.
There's a high sky ceiling for Koeninger on both sides of the ball, ultimately day one traits for both. It's as legit of a two way prospect as you'll find at the prep level.
