Schaffner had 2 really strong years at North Dakota State. He hit the transfer portal this offseason, electing to take his talents to North Carolina. Now with the Tar Heals, Schaffner is off to a strong start to the 2026 season, still showcasing some of the qualities that made him such a highly regarded transfer in the first place, but also taking notable strides in other parts of his game.
Everybody when mentioning Schaffner is going to talk about the pure contact ability and for good reason. The guy is an absolute bat-to-ball artist. Schaffner made contact with 90 percent of pitches he saw last season, in-zone that rate rose to a gaudy 94 percent rate. At North Carolina, Schaffner is still continuing those trends. Heck, he's even dropped his strikeout rate from last year while upping the level of competition. Now, there are some concerns with what Schaffner's future impact will look like. It's well below average raw power, and with limited feel for lifting the baseball, Schaffner's homerun total across his collegiate career speaks for itself. Still, at 6 foot 2, 170 pounds, Schaffner still has some decent size he could put on, with room for more bat speed.
Schaffner is a solid defender at the shortstop position with great range. He has a chance to stick up the middle as a pro.
