Luke Costello
Scouting Report
Costello had a pretty loud freshman year at Wake Forest, hitting .290 with 10 homeruns in 155 plate appearences. He's a draft-eligible sophmore, and looks to return as one of the top bats in the deamon deacon's lineup in 2026.
What's obvious when watching Costello swing is that his bat is lightning quick through the zone. Throughout the 2025 season, Costello ranked amongst the best in the nation from an average exit velocity perspective. His feel to pull the baseball in the air - exceptional. It's plus power projection, and Costello has the approach that could help it actually translate too. He ran just a 15 percent chase rate in 2025, an elite rate. Costello does have some swing-and-miss present in his profile, telling by his 19 percent in-zone whiff rate, though his overall contact rates are solid-average. It's a relatively advanced offensive profile across the board.
Costello does have some lingering questions on the defensive side of the ball, as he's seen most his time at Wake Forest at a left field spot, and he's proven to be just a fringy defender there. He's a below average runner with average arm strength, some first base risk definetely present. Even still, the bat will carry this profile heavily, and it's one that appeals to models aswell considering Costello will be just 21.2 on draft day. His brother and former top prospect in the '26 class Andrew Costello also just enrolled early at Wake Forest, so that will be a fun dynamic to watch for this year.
