Wes Mendes

Mendes is an athletic left hander who gets down the mound well with a silky smooth operation, getting to a high three quarter slot where he creates solid extension. What stands out about Mendes is his complete pitch mix, already possesing 4 solid pitches.

The first is a fastball that has been up to 96 and will normally sit in the 90-94 range with terrific riding life up in the zone and some tailing action in on the hands of lefties. The pitch can at times struggle to miss bats when he leaves it at the bottom of the zone. Mendes's best offering is an upper 70's changeup that he really sells well and gets significant tummble and arm side run on. The pitch really gets hitters out in front and chasing at the bottom of the zone, and projects as a plus offering headed forward. Mendes features two breaking balls, the better one being a sharp mid 80's slider with short, tight break that flashes above average upside. He also throws a slower mid 70's curveball that flashes solid depth, but he can tend to leave the pitch up, and shows limited feel for commanding the offering.

Overall, Mendes has the cieling to be the best college left hander in this entire class. Should the velocity jump a tick or two and the performance show through, there's a top 2 round cieling here.
